Henderson is extremely gracious to have had the opportunity to build a strong relationship with the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA and its multiple locations spread throughout our community. Not only have we been able to work “hands on” through building new locations and renovating existing facilities, but the YMCA has given Henderson and our employees the chance to volunteer and give back in various rewarding ways!
Friday, August 14th was the “opening day” for the R.F. Wilkinson YMCA’s “Bright Beginnings.” Since 2003, Bright Beginnings has provided local children with new clothes and school supplies, giving them the tools to start the upcoming school year with confidence and an excitement to succeed!
On the day of the event a group of young shoppers met their volunteers, or “Shopping Buddies” at the Marquis Center Kohl’s. Throughout the morning, you could find the pairs having fun while shopping, playing games and enjoying breakfast, provided by Chick Fil A.
One of our employees, Amy Brittain had the chance to participate in Friday’s Bright Beginnings event.
“This past year, I was given the opportunity to serve as an R.F. Wilkinson YMCA Board Member. Throughout our meetings, other board members would share their past experiences volunteering with Bright Beginnings. This was an event I had been looking forward to since starting on the board in January. After volunteering on Friday, I can only add to the positive experiences of my fellow board members. In just a couple of hours, I was able to spend time with a young girl and do what most girls enjoy doing – shop! However, this shopping trip was different than any one before. I was able to see firsthand how the Y’s programs make a difference in our community – specifically, the impact Bright Beginnings had made for my shopping buddy by providing her with the things she’ll use throughout the school year. I have a feeling that on the first day of Kindergarten, she will be wearing a butterfly t- shirt, sparkly tennis shoes and a BIG smile on her face!”
